Men’s Mental Health Awareness: Resources and Support
June marks Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to highlight the unique challenges men face and the resources available to support them. At CCMH, we know that our mental health is truly just as important as our physical health, and we're committed to helping men in our community find the support they need to thrive.
For generations, men have been encouraged to "tough it out" or keep their feelings to themselves. While self-reliance can be a strength, it often leads to isolation and untreated mental health issues.
Research shows that men are less likely to be diagnosed with mental health conditions and less likely to seek help, even though they're at a higher risk for suicide or substance misuse. Men die by suicide nearly four times more often than women in the U.S., and 1 in 10 men experience depression or anxiety, yet only about half seek treatment.
Men's mental health struggles often look different from women's. Symptoms can be more "externalized," such as anger, irritability, or substance use, rather than sadness or withdrawal. Other signs can include:
- Increased risky behaviors
- Loss of interest in activities
- Changes in sleep or appetite
- Hopelessness or trouble concentrating
If you notice these signs in yourself or a loved one, you must seek support. Your life matters, and you're worthy of a safe and healthy one!
The Power Behind Connection
Support groups (in-person or virtual) can offer a safe space for men to openly share their experiences, break down stigmas together, and build meaningful friendships. Men who participate in support groups often find a sense of purpose and mutual respect for others, helping them effectively manage their mental health.
Where to Find Help
There are more resources than ever, specifically for men's mental health. Here are some trusted places to turn for resources and support:
- Face It Foundation: Peer support and resources for men facing depression.
- Man Therapy: Uses humor and relatable content to break down barriers and encourage men to seek additional help.
- Therapy for Black Men and Black Men Heal: Culturally competent care and therapist directories for men of color.
- Local Support Groups: Both local and online groups offer spaces for men to connect and support each other. Spend time researching your local area for support group opportunities.
For those looking for a therapist, directories like The Men's List, Melanin & Mental Health, and local mental health organizations can help you find someone who understands men's unique experiences.
Supporting the Men in Your Life
If you're becoming concerned about a friend, brother, partner, or father, start by checking in with them. Listen openly without judgment, encourage conversation, and let them know that asking for help is 100% okay. Sometimes, it can make all the difference to know that someone cares and is there to listen.
At CCMH, we're here to support you with genuine compassion, understanding, and practical resources based on your unique situation and needs. Whether you're struggling with stress, depression, or just feeling overwhelmed with life at the moment, help is available however and whenever you need it. Don't hesitate to contact us or take a look at the organizations listed above to learn what's available to you.
